Shortly after relocating to Charlottesville, VA from Ft. Lauderdale, FL, I became active in the Jefferson Area Libertarians (JAL), a local affiliate of the Libertarian Party of America.

Before: The logo and banner the JAL was using at the time
Upon discovering my background in graphics, the JAL’s leadership asked whether I would be willing to redesign its existing logo. After seeing the graphic that the JAL was using for its website banner and letterhead, I agreed:
.
After my redesign
This is the finished logo that I created for the JAL:
.
And here is how I applied the logo for use as the JAL’s website header, and printed letterhead:

I intentionally left the upper right quadrant of this graphic blank to accommodate a vertically-scrolling text marquee, which would contain a rotating series of short quotes/quote excerpts, from pivotal advocates of liberty and individual rights – especially Thomas Jefferson.
Based on the JAL’s satisfaction with Jon’s work on its logo, and its recognition of my other skills, it enlisted my aid in a variety of other internal and outreach projects (referenced below), which the group’s leaders claim were of significant benefit:
“The graphic work you have done for us will help us to present a more professional image to the community in everything we do. The new logo you created for us… (is) a much-needed improvement to the appearance of our website and… all our written materials. As a graphic professional, you are well aware of how important first impressions are. Your efforts have already reaped benefits for the JAL. […] To earn media attention, we have to show them that we are serious about what we are doing. Thank you for your help to get the message of freedom out to our neighbors in central Virginia.”
– Arin Sime, Chairman“Jon has made a tremendous contribution to various liberty-oriented organizations in Virginia. In particular, he has been of enormous help to the JAL, and the organizations with which we are affiliated. His considerable talents as a creative & media consultant and graphic artist have helped to raise the profile and effectiveness of all these organizations’ communications and outreach efforts. Jon has earned a well-justified reputation among his colleagues for high-quality work, delivered when promised. Whenever I am approached by liberty-oriented organizations and candidates in need of help with media materials, Jon is the first person I recommend. Quite simply, Jon is a tremendous resource for the liberty movement.”

Chairman, Libertarian Party of America, 2000-2002

Some of the additional projects that I assisted the JAL with include:
- VirginiaPropertyRights.org: – A rapid-reaction media project in the wake of the Kelo decision regarding eminent domain (and as an offshoot of my work on the “Lost Liberty Hotel” project).
- Development of a graphical presentation for local governments throughout central Virginia, that explained how ever-increasing rates of taxation on property harms citizens.
- Strategic and creative consulting on various media outreach and grassroots support programs.
- Co-writing of a script for a tax day radio commercial:
