Summary: After the success of a 3D animated marketing video for Intel that I helped TRACER to develop, as a creative consultant, I was hired to help its CEO write this book, commissioned by SAMS Publishing, about the science, history and future of computer graphics, for those who wish to work in the profession

(1) Background

In 1992-93, I worked as a creative consultant to TRACER Design, a multimedia and 3D animation firm in Phoenix AZ.  I was initially brought in to consult on, write the narrative script, and design the storyboards for an animated marketing video to enable Intel to introduce the world to its new line of wireless modems for portable devices. See the project profile here.

The finished Intel video, “Freedom,” was met with such a positive reaction from its executives and the animation community, that TRACER’s CEO, Chad Little, hired me to help develop several other projects — including a book and multimedia CD-ROM he was contracted by SAMS Publishing to write, entitled, “Becoming A Computer Artist” (BACA).

Specifically, the purpose of BACA was to present the history, technology, key terms, concepts, tools and creative approaches of computer graphics, for beginners.

(2) The work I did to develop key components of “Becoming A Computer Artist”

In addition to providing creative consulting on the overall content structure of the printed book, I was responsible for researching and writing the following three key chapters of the companion multimedia CD-ROM:

  • “The History of Computer Graphics”: A 5,800-word script, presenting the fascinating lineage of key thinkers from mathematics, science, technology, business and the arts who contributed to advancing computer graphics.
  • “Fundamentals of Computer Graphics”: A 7,250-word script, detailing in words and visualizations all major aspects of computer graphics technology, from both functional and efficiency perspectives.
  • “Copyright Basics”: A 2,100-word text presenting a detailed primer for new computer artists on the laws pertaining to copyright, intellectual property, work-for-hire, authorship, manipulation, and use of original works.
